Online Mental Health Support for Individuals and Communities

Step One has been supporting people in Devon with their mental health for over 80 years, working closely with local NHS Trusts, GP surgeries and communities.

The global pandemic is having a major impact on people’s mental health across Devon, with record numbers of people seeking support for their mental health, and NHS services struggling to meet that sharp rise in demand.

BeWell@StepOne plans to provide support to as many people as possible across the county through online courses, support groups and learning opportunities. We aim to use our experience of providing support services to reduce the pressure on our local NHS services and help individuals to manage their own mental health, and through peer groups support others’ in their communities.

Our online courses are free to anyone living in Devon and are run by professional, qualified and supportive tutors with lived experience of mental health conditions.

Our Online Courses

We will be running courses on the following topics:

  • H.O.P.E (Help Overcoming Problems Effectively)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Managing OCD
  • Managing Self-Harm
  • Resilience and Wellbeing
  • Healthy living

Courses will be run in small groups with supportive tutors and will provide a safe arena to explore mental health and wellbeing issues.

The H.O.P.E Course
Help Overcoming Problems Effectively

The H.O.P.E course
(Help Overcoming Problems Effectively) is a 6-week online course developed by Torbay
and South Devon NHS Trust designed to help people to cope better with their long-term
health conditions.

Over the six weeks of this course, you will work with trained facilitators to build your confidence and learn ways to
help you better manage your
long-term condition, including mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.


Course Starts:
Monday 19th July
1.30pm to 3.30pm for six weeks

Understanding Depression

This 4-week course provides information on depression,
the signs and symptoms of depression, self-help techniques and where to go for further help.


Course Starts:
Tuesday 6th July
2.00pm to 3.30pm each week

Creating a Mental
Health Toolkit

This 4-week course will provide you with the tools and techniques
to help you manage the
symptoms of anxiety.

Course starts:
Monday 6th September
1.30pm to 3.00pm each week

Braving
Bereavement

Braving Bereavement is a 4-week course providing a safe space for you to explore your grief and encourages you to carry the memory of the person you have
lost as you seek to move forward.

Course starts:
Thursday 22nd July
2.00pm to 3.30pm each week

Let's Talk

This 3-week course will help you gain a better understanding of wellbeing, before exploring strategies to help you improve
and maintain good wellbeing.

Course Starts:
Tuesday 7th September

Resilience, Assertiveness
and Self-Care

This 4-week course will look at the ways you can become more resilient, and help you to
recognise the strengths that you already have so that you can take better care of yourself.

Course starts:
Wednesday 1st September
10.00am to 11.30am each week

Emotional Intelligence

During the four weekly sessions of this course, you will learn to
manage your emotions and use them to guide your thinking
and behaviours.

We're offering these workshops as part of our summer programme

"Make Time" - How to focus on what's important each day

In this 2-hour workshop, we will discuss how we can make time in the day for the things that matter.

Understanding Anxiety

This 90-minute workshop will explore anxiety and the many coping strategies that can help reduce the symptoms of anxiety.

Wednesday 28th July
10.00am to 11.30am

Food and Mood

This 90-minute workshop examines the importance of our relationship with food and the effect of certain foods on our mental health.

Thursday 16th September-10.00am to 11.30am

Alternatives to Self-Harm

This 90-minute workshop will explore the topic of
self-harm. We will explore techniques that may serve to discourage someone from self-harming.

Managing Your Anger

In this 90-minute workshop, we will look at identifying different types of anger and how anger can mask
other emotions.


Wednesday 18th August

Supporting People with their Mental Health

This 90-minute workshop looks at ways of
supporting others with their mental health.

All Welcome Wellbeing - Online Peer Support Group

Would you like regular online support from people who understand how you feel? Could you share your experiences to help others?
 
BeWell@StepOne have launched the ‘All Welcome Wellbeing’ online peer support group.  This group meet online each Tuesday from 2pm to 3.30pm.
 
Run by two of our course trainers, Sharon and Rachael, our ‘All Welcome Wellbeing’ group offers you an opportunity to meet others virtually, share your experiences, discuss the techniques learnt in our courses, and develop self-management techniques to maintain good mental health.
Everyone is welcome to join this group!
