BeWell@StepOne Online Courses

Online Mental Health Support for Individuals and Communities

Step One has been supporting people in Devon with their mental health for over 85 years, working closely with local NHS Trusts, GP surgeries and communities.

Record numbers of people across Devon are seeking support for their mental health, and at BeWell@StepOne, we use our specialist knowledge of mental health service provision to meet some of that demand.

BeWell@StepOne provides support to as many people as possible across the county through our online courses, support groups and learning opportunities. We help people in need of mental health support to manage their own wellbeing and, through peer groups, support others in their communities.

Our online courses are free and are run by professional, qualified and supportive tutors with lived experience of mental health conditions

Our Online Courses

We run courses covering a wide range of topics, including:

  • H.O.P.E (Helping Overcome Problems Effectively)

  • Managing Self-Harm
  • Resilience and Wellbeing
  • Healthy living

Courses are run in small groups with supportive tutors and provide a safe arena to explore mental health and wellbeing issues.

Upcoming Courses

The H.O.P.E Course
Helping Overcome Problems Effectively

The H.O.P.E course (Helping Overcome Problems Effectively) is a 6-week online course developed by Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust designed to help people to cope better with their long-term health conditions.

Over the six weeks of this course, you will work with trained facilitators to build your confidence and learn ways to help you better manage your long-term condition, including mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Course Starts:
Thursday 7th July 3.00pm - 5.00pm
Monday 1st August 6.00pm - 7.30pm

Managing Your Anger

Do you sometimes feel frightened that you can be overwhelmed by anger?
Are your angry outbursts making life difficult for you and those around you?

Managing Your Anger is a 4-week course that will help you understand the anger emotion, teach you how to identify and deal with personal anger triggers and how to effectively deal with others when anger arises. This course isn’t about making anger disappear, but using anger in a healthy and controlled way.

Wednesday 10th August 10.00am - 12.00pm

Wellbeing and Resilience

Do you wonder why you get emotional while others around you appear able to take things in their stride?

This 4-week online course will look at ways you can become more resilient and help you to recognise the strengths that you already have so that you can take better care of yourself.

Monday 11th July 3.00pm - 5.00pm

Behavioural Activation - An Outside-In Approach

Do you find your feelings of low mood are stopping you from getting on with your life, or do you not feel like yourself for long periods of time?

This 4-week online course will allow you to explore strategies associated with behavioural activation, helping you to break the cycle of depression and build up the confidence and motivation to tackle depressive states.

Step One BeWell Mental Health Course - Braving Bereavement

Braving Bereavement

Have you lost a loved one and find that you have been unable to cope since their passing?

Braving Bereavement is a 4-week online course allowing you to explore your grief and encourage you not to ‘let go' of the person you have lost, but to find a way to move forward and carry their memory with you.

In the course, you will achieve a better understanding of the grief process and the uniqueness of everyone’s experience of bereavement. You will have had an opportunity to share experiences and memories, talk about your loved ones and let go of any anger/pressures/expectations. We will also explore relaxation techniques to help with the grief process.

Mental Health First Aid in Devon

Mental Health First Aid (NUC)I Accredited)

Are you an employer looking to train staff in Mental Health First Aid, or do you work for an organisation and wish to be able to support your colleagues with wellbeing?

This course will allow you to understand the signs and symptoms of different mental health problems and be able to start a conversation about mental health.

Changing Negative Self-Talk

We all have that little voice that makes us doubt ourselves, or gives us that internal negative feedback. This workshops will help you to challenge that voice and consider alternative possibilities to make your inner voice more positive!

Step One BeWell Mental Health Course - Understanding OCD

Understanding OCD

This course is for anyone who would like to learn about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (and the challenges that people face. It will look at various types of OCD and provide strategies, that will support people to self-manage their symptoms. It is very difficult for people living with OCD, when others do not understand. This course will provide a safe space to share with others.

Understanding Depression

1 in 4 people in the UK will be diagnosed with depression in their lifetime (ONS). This workshop looks at information and self-help techniques to help cope with depression, for yourself or when helping to support others. It also looks at where to go for further help. Depression is a constant feeling of low mood and this course will help you to explore why we may be experiencing these feelings, and what coping techniques can be used to help you lift our mood.

Online and in-person Peer Support Groups

Would you like regular online support from people who understand how you feel? Could you share your experiences to help others?
 
Run by two of our course trainers, our online and in-person peer support groups offer you an opportunity to meet others, share your experiences, discuss the techniques learnt in our courses, and develop self-management techniques to maintain good mental health.
