BeWell@StepOne: Starting a Conversation About Mental Health for Communities

We understand that people can be nervous about joining online groups and discussing mental health issues. So, we've put together a course spotlight to make things a little easier when you're deciding which of our courses will be best for you. Here is a more information about our Starting a Conversation About Mental Health for Communities online workshop, which starts Thursday 14th April at 9.30am to 12.30pm

We’re constantly told we should be talking more about our mental health. But when it comes to doing it – actually speaking to someone you’re worried about or opening up yourself – it can be terrifying. However it’s common to feel worried about upsetting people you care about, and feel nervous about what people will think, or how it might affect your relationships.

Talking can be a way to cope with a problem you’ve been carrying around in your head for a while. Just being listened to can help you feel supported and less alone. And it works both ways. If you open up, it might encourage others to do the same.

Can you tell us a bit about this course, who it’s aimed at and what it aims to achieve?

Starting a Conversation About Mental Health fro Communities is a one-off workshop developed by the First Aid for Mental Health course. This workshop in particular aims to give you the confidence to open up and start that important conversation about mental health by providing you with professional tips, tricks and strategies.

Overall, this workshop will provide you with

  • An introduction to the use of communication skills to encourage a conversation about mental health
  • An understanding of the different approaches involved in the use of different communication skills
  • An appreciation of the importance of opening up about your mental health

This course is aimed at those who want to understand how to start a difficult conversation with someone who they suspect is suffering with their mental health, this may be  a loved one, or a work colleague.

Key takeaway from this course: by talking about mental health we can break down stereotypes, improve relationships, and take the stigma out of something that affects us all
